Rolex OG Gold Nipple Dial Submariner
Up for sale here is an iconic gold submariner from the mid seventies. The nipple dial is absolutely flawless and the hands have aged slightly darker. This dial is framed by a light charcoal faded ghost bezel insert which really draws out its full beauty. The case has been recently detailed and remains thick and even with prominent chamfers. The original oyster band was retightened, has zero stretch and all its links with the original old style clasp. The movement is running strong and keeping excellent time.
The history of the Rolex Submariner nipple dial is intertwined with the evolution and iconic status of the Rolex Submariner watch itself. The nipple dial refers to a specific dial variation characterized by raised, dome-shaped hour markers resembling small nipples.
The Rolex Submariner was first introduced in 1953 as a professional diving watch. Its robust construction, water resistance, and rotating bezel with luminescent markers made it a trusted tool for divers. Over time, the Submariner became synonymous with style, precision, and adventure.
Evolution of the Dial: In the early years of the Submariner, Rolex used various dial designs, including the classic "gilt" and "white" dials. However, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Rolex transitioned to a new dial variation characterized by raised, dome-shaped hour markers, thus giving birth to the term "nipple dial.
The nipple dial featured hour markers that protruded slightly from the dial surface, resembling small nipples. These markers added a unique visual element to the Submariner, setting it apart from other dial variations. The three-dimensional appearance of the markers enhanced legibility and added an extra touch of elegance to the watch.

Rarity and Collectibility: While Rolex produced Submariner watches with nipple dials for a relatively short period, they have become highly sought after by collectors due to their limited availability. The nipple dial Submariners are considered rare and desirable, adding a sense of exclusivity and uniqueness to the watch.

Material and Variations: Nipple dials were primarily featured on Submariner models with 18k gold cases, such as the reference 1680/8. These models exuded a luxurious appeal with their gold cases and bracelets, combined with the distinctive nipple dial design. The interplay of gold and the raised hour markers created an elegant aesthetic that appealed to Rolex enthusiasts.

Continuation and Legacy: While Rolex eventually transitioned to different dial variations and styles, the nipple dial remains a significant part of Submariner's history. It showcases Rolex's dedication to innovation, design, and attention to detail. The rarity and timeless appeal of nipple dial Submariners have solidified their status as highly sought-after collector's items.
As the Rolex Submariner continues to evolve and captivate watch enthusiasts worldwide, the nipple dial serves as a reminder of the brand's commitment to excellence and its ability to create enduring designs that withstand the test of time.
